During the early 14th century, the people of Southampton submitted a petition to the King and Council accusing Robert Batail of Winchelsea and other men from the Cinque Ports of conspiring with Hugh le Despenser the Younger to burn their ships, goods, chattels, and merchandise worth over £8000 during the Despenser War. However, their petition earned them a prison sentence at Portchester Castle for insinuating that the King’s advisor was involved in the conspiracy. When King Edward III ascended to the throne, the petition was given to him and his mother, Queen Isabella, who was in charge of the town. The country likely organized the writ of trespass to absolve the community of Southampton of any guilt.
