Bitterne Manor has a rich history that spans several centuries, from its Roman origins to its use by the Bishop of Winchester during the Norman period. The manor house was also used as a farm, and its proximity to the River Itchen made it a convenient location for the distribution of wine and salt. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Kilwardby, visited the manor in 1274 and spent Christmas there. In the aftermath of the Black Death, the scarcity of farm laborers led to the house being let to tenants and the farmland sublet to tenant farmers.
