Weston, a suburb located on the south-eastern side of Southampton, UK, was originally a small fishing community dating back to the end of the 10th century. In 1332, John de Weston was recorded as a Burgess of Southampton. Records from the 17th and 18th centuries show occasional disputes over fishing rights. The Seaweed Hut, which used to store fishermen’s equipment, was present on Weston Shore and appears on 17th century maps. Ralph Chamberlayne’s wife Alice inherited an estate on the east bank of the River Itchen in 1424, and at least a portion of it remained connected with the Chamberlayne family. In 1781, William Chamberlayne inherited what was then known as the Weston Park Estate from Thomas Dummer. Weston includes part of the Mayfield Park area, which was previously the Mayfield Estate, and is surrounded by Woolston, Sholing, Netley, and Southampton Water.
