Situated on the eastern side of Southampton in Southern Sholing, previously spelled as Scholing, is a district bordered by Bitterne, Thornhill, and Woolston. The name’s origin is uncertain, although the most commonly accepted theory is that it comes from the Anglo-Saxon term for “hill on the shore.”
St. Mary’s is the parish church of Sholing, and it was inaugurated in 1866. The first Vicar, Reverend Francis Davidson, who was Harold Davidson’s father, served for almost 50 years.
In 1920, the village was incorporated into the Borough of Southampton. Sholing is linked to Southampton and Portsmouth by a railway station that was launched in 1866.
