Before King Henry departed for the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the leaders of the “Southampton Plot” – Richard, Earl of Cambridge, Henry Scrope, 3rd Baron Scrope of Masham, and Sir Thomas Grey of Heton – were charged with high treason, tried at the present-day Red Lion public house on High Street, and subsequently executed outside the Bargate.
Southampton’s city walls feature God’s House Tower, the first artillery fortification in England, built in 1417. The tower has served various purposes over time, including as the residence of the city’s gunner, the town gaol, and even storage for the Southampton Harbour Board. Until September 2011, it also housed the Museum of Archaeology. While the walls were completed in the 15th century, Henry VIII’s development of new fortifications along Southampton Water and the Solent rendered the city’s walls unnecessary for defense.
