Hedge End, a village in Hampshire saw an increase in travellers after the development of two new roads, Northam Road and St. Johns Road, in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The Northam road had a tollgate at Hedge End and the St. Johns Road provided access to the Floating Bridge at Woolston. In 1863-65, Botley Common, a plot of land dividing Hedge End, was divided into plots through the Enclosure Act, and the lord of the manor, William Warner, was assigned three acres for a Recreation Ground. St. John’s School was constructed in 1863 and later expanded, and a library was established in 
1888. St. John’s Church was consecrated in 1874 and became a separate parish in 1876. A sub-post office was set up in 1894, and the village was constituted a civil parish the same year, taking over responsibility for the recreation ground. Today, the recreation ground between St. John’s Road and Bursledon Road is the only remaining part of Botley Common.
