Totton used to be the largest village in England before it was upgraded to a town in 1974. The town comprises of multiple smaller villages, including Testwood, Calmore, and Hammonds Green, in addition to the original village of Totton, which have been linked by new housing developments to form the present-day town. This is evident by the presence of several local shops that previously served their respective villages and continue to do so to some extent. Prior to the installation of forest perambulation fencing in 1967, New Forest ponies were free to roam the town’s streets. The town’s built-up area has significantly expanded since the latter half of the 20th century, creating an almost continuous network of development with neighbouring villages. As a result, places like Ower, Netley Marsh, and Ashurst are now indistinguishable from Totton in terms of their built-up areas.
