Hamble-le-Rice played a significant role in the aviation industry before and during the Second World War, serving as a major flying school for aircraft such as the Spitfire, Lancaster, and Wellington. More than 500 aircraft were constructed there, including the prototype Armstrong Whitworth Ensign and Albemarle, which made their first flights in 1938 and 1940, respectively. In 1960, the Hamble College of Air Training was established as the Air Corporations Joint Training Scheme, which later became British Airways, providing fixed-wing and helicopter training. The south airfield has disappeared, while the north airfield has been partly developed into housing, with the rest being overgrown and owned by property developers Persimmon. The aviation industry still has a significant presence in the area, with the Hamble Aerostructures factory in Kings Avenue, which is now a subsidiary of the Spanish company Aernnova.
