Hillyfields is a residential area located in the suburb of Bassett in Southampton, Hampshire, England. The area is known for its green spaces, which include the Hillyfields Local Nature Reserve, a popular spot for walking and picnicking. Hillyfields also has a small shopping area with a convenience store, a hair salon, and other local businesses. The housing stock in Hillyfields consists mainly of 1930s semi-detached and terraced houses, with some newer properties. The area is served by good transport links, including several bus routes that connect to the city centre and beyond. During the 15th century, a family by the name of ‘Basset’ resided in South Stoneham, and it is believed that the place name may have originated from their family name. Stoneham Common was the area that encompassed the Bassett region, as depicted on a 1791 map by Thomas Milne, which also marked the existence of ‘Bassets Lane’ without any connected village. The village of Bassett appeared on an 1810 map, located approximately in the same area where Bassett Green Village is located today. As a secluded location outside the borough of Southampton, Bassett grew as a popular retreat for wealthy individuals in the late 18th century. However, by the time of the Ordnance Survey of 1897, Bassett had been renamed as Bassett Green with a double ‘t,’ while a more westerly region west of Bassett Wood was
recognized as Bassett. Despite being considered a prosperous district at the town’s outskirts, Reverend Elliott Kenworthy-Browne, who was the rector of North Stoneham from 1886 to 1912, discovered that about three-quarters of the population of 800 were poor, mainly consisting of mechanics and labourers. In 1920, Bassett, along with Bitterne, Sholing, Woolston, Weston, Peartree, and Swaythling, were included within the expanded boundaries of Southampton.
