After the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, Southampton became the primary port of transit between Winchester, then the capital of England, and Normandy. The town’s wealth is evident in surviving remains of 12th-century merchants’ houses, such as King John’s House and Canute’s Palace, as well as the construction of Southampton Castle in the 12th century. By the 13th century, Southampton had become a prominent port, specializing in the import of French wine in exchange for English cloth and wool. The Franciscan friary was established in Southampton around 1233 and in 1290, the friars constructed a water supply system that carried water from Conduit Head, which can still be seen near Hill Lane in Shirley, to the friary’s site within the town walls. The Conduit House on Commercial Road also contains further remnants of the water supply system.
