The friary was dissolved in 1538 and its remains stood until the 1940s when they were destroyed.
Southampton played a significant role in history as the point of departure for the Pilgrim Fathers aboard the Mayflower in 1620. During the English Civil War in 1642, a Parliamentary garrison occupied Southampton. The Royalists approached as close as Redbridge in March 1644 but were unable to capture the town.
In 1740, Southampton transformed into a spa town, and by the 1760s, despite its lack of a suitable beach, it became a popular destination for sea bathing. Innovative buildings dedicated to sea bathing were erected at West Quay, featuring baths that were filled and emptied by the tide. Walter Taylor, a Southampton engineer, played a crucial role in the Industrial Revolution by mechanizing the block-making process in the 18th century. The port was also a crucial embarkation point for military operations, including during wars with the French in the 18th century.
