In 1536, after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the Manor of Townhill was granted to Sir William Paulet by Henry VIII. At that time, the land was primarily used for farming and became recognized as Townhill Farm. Eventually, Townhill Farm became a part of the Manor of South Stoneham, but in 1787, Nathaniel Middleton, who had accumulated his wealth while serving in the British East India Company, purchased the property. He transformed the farmhouse into a personal residence and renamed the estate Townhill Park. Nathaniel Middleton made several enhancements to the farmhouse, but it was damaged in a fire, and thus underwent a significant renovation in 1793. Later, the Gater family took possession of the property, who were also proprietors of the nearby Gaters Mill situated near Mansbridge.
